An Amazing Kid: Carter and Olivia Reis

Carter and Olivia became advocates for species preservation when they understood that by the time their own children grew up — their own children's generation would be unable to see certain animal species. Without preservation, some animals would follow in the same path as the extinctions of the dodo and the pasenger pidgeon. As soon as the realization sunk in, they created a nonprofit organization called "One More Generation" (OMG) and became involved in numerous initiative and projects ranging from sponsoring a local ban on plastic bags to sponsoring a planet-wide project combating ocean acidification.

An Amazing Kid: Maria Keller

Maria Keller's mom, Maura, nominated her daughter as this issue's Amazing Kid. She said that recognition would provide appropriate acknowledgement of Maria's amazing efforts. After reading what Maria has accomplished, I have to agree. Ten-year-old Maria is an avid reader. When she was eight she asked her mom why other children didn't seem to read as much as she did.

An Amazing Kid: Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan has a passion for reaching out a helping hand so the world's homeless children. An old caring soul and an amazing spirit have taken up residence in Troye's 15-year-old body. Troye lives in Australia. His heart of concern for homeless children around the world came from reflection on the important role that his own home and family pay in his well-being. Just being away from home for a little while creates feelings of homesickness, which helped Troy to empathize with children who had no home at all.

An Amazing Kid: Brittany Fields

A long-time family friend of the family Fields, Chester C. Nicholas, nominated Brittany as this month's Amazing Kid. He said that when he learned from a friend about the "Amazing Kids Award" he immediately thought of Brittany as a candidate. Brittany demonstrated her commitment to making the world a better place as Junior Team Captain during last June's "Cure Kids Cancer" march sponsored by Six Flags and the Children's Miracle Network. The march was intended to help raise community awareness of the plight of children.

Do you know an amazing kid who you would like to nominate for this award? Six times annually, Kids Helping Kids Leadership Academy selects an Amazing Kid from a multitude of nominations from kids, parents, teachers and people everywhere.

Our results are published in110° Magazine, a publication that personalizes the community by focusing upon the people, places, and businesses of Contra Costa.
